36 State Governors Declare Support For State Police
Governors of Nigeria’s thirty-six states have declared support for the establishment of State Police as part of ongoing efforts to reform the country’s security architecture.
The position was announced under the platform of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in a communiqué signed by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The decision followed deliberations at the NGF meeting held in Abuja, which extended from Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday.
According to the communiqué, the governors agreed that any framework for State Police must remain constitutionally compliant and reflect the principles of federalism while protecting the rights of citizens.
The governors reached the position after receiving presentations from the Forum’s secretariat and a delegation of State Attorneys-General on proposals and constitutional frameworks for establishing State Police across Nigeria.
The communiqué stated that extensive consultations had already been conducted with the Attorneys-General to review proposed constitutional amendments and implementation structures.
“Governors emphasised the need for the State Police to be constitutionally sound and aligned with federalism and citizens’ rights.
“The Forum noted the collaborative effort and added that the consultation outcomes would strengthen the States’ collective position,” part of the communiqué stated.
The development comes as legislative efforts on State Police continue at the National Assembly.
The House of Representatives has already passed the State Police Bill, while the proposal has also progressed through second reading in the Senate.
Beyond security reforms, the governors reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s power sector and deepening collaboration among stakeholders to improve access to reliable and affordable electricity.
The Forum also received a presentation on the proposed National Solar Super-Grid (NSSG) Initiative, a project designed to expand electricity access through decentralised solar generation integrated into a national high-voltage transmission network.
According to the governors, the initiative has the potential to support industrial growth, improve energy security, strengthen state electricity markets and accelerate economic development across the country.
In addition, the governors resolved to support the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to improving nutrition outcomes and reducing child malnutrition nationwide.
The Forum further acknowledged ongoing efforts toward the National Nutrition Bill and encouraged sustained engagement among stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s legal and policy framework for nutrition governance.
