‘South Africa Must Go’ Protests Erupt In Ghana Over Xenophobic Attacks
Some Ghanaian youths under the banner of the “South Africa Must Go” campaign on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Accra, demanding action over recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa and calling for the closure of South African-owned businesses operating in Ghana.
The demonstration followed renewed concerns across Africa over attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, prompting several countries to begin evacuation efforts for affected citizens.
Protesters gathered in parts of Accra carrying placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with victims of the attacks.
Videos circulating online showed demonstrators displaying messages including “Ghanaian Lives Matter” while converging around the premises of a South African company.
Participants condemned the reported attacks on Ghanaians and other African migrants living in South Africa and called for stronger responses from governments across the continent.
The protest comes amid wider regional reactions to the reported violence, with countries including Nigeria, Ghana, and others taking steps to assist citizens seeking to return home.
In Nigeria, the first batch of evacuees recently arrived in Lagos under a government-coordinated repatriation arrangement.
The demonstrators maintained that the safety and dignity of African citizens across the continent must remain a priority and urged authorities to take practical steps to prevent further escalation of tensions.
