‘I Have Heard You Loud and Clear’: Jonathan Speaks on 2027 Speculation
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has responded to mounting calls for his return to active politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election, telling supporters in Abuja that he had “heard” their appeals and would consult widely before making any decision.
Jonathan made the remark on Thursday while addressing members of the Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan during a rally held in the nation’s capital.
The gathering drew supporters from different parts of the country, many of whom urged the former president to contest the next presidential election.
“I have heard you loud and clear,” Jonathan said. “I will consult widely before taking any decision.”
The former president, however, stopped short of formally declaring his intention to run, noting that “the presidential race is not a computer game,” an apparent reference to the complexity of Nigeria’s political landscape and the consultations required before entering the race.
The rally, which took place around the Maitama axis of Abuja, witnessed supporters carrying placards with inscriptions such as “GEJ: Nigeria is dying, save it” and “GEJ, if you no run, we quench.”
The procession reportedly caused temporary traffic disruptions in parts of the city as supporters marched and chanted in support of Jonathan’s possible return.
Political pressure has continued to build around the former president in recent months, with several groups and stakeholders within and outside the opposition calling on him to re-enter the political arena ahead of the 2027 general election.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has yet to officially declare any political ambition.
