Oil Theft Dragnet Widens as EFCC Probes Eight Arrested in Rivers Raid
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun investigation into eight suspected oil thieves arrested in Rivers State, following their handover by the Nigerian Navy.
The alleged suspects were apprehended on March 22, 2026, by operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Pathfinder, during a routine anti-crude oil theft patrol in Degema, Ogbogoro and Ogbologo areas of Rivers State.
According to the Navy, the operation was conducted by its Anti-Crude Oil Theft (Anti-COT) team following credible intelligence on ongoing illegal refining activities within the axis.
Lt. Commander J.J. Jerome, who represented the Navy, said the suspects were intercepted while transporting suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
“The operation followed credible intelligence on illegal activities in the area. Some suspected armed escorts fled on sighting the patrol team, while eight suspects were arrested,” he said.
He added that two boats loaded with about 44,000 litres of suspected illicit petroleum products were seized during the operation, alongside 423 sacks containing petroleum substances.
The suspects and recovered items were subsequently handed over to the EFCC for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Receiving the suspects at the Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, EFCC Superintendent S.E. Emerole Chioma commended the Navy for its cooperation.
“We appreciate the synergy between our agencies. Investigations will be carried out, and those found culpable will be prosecuted,” she stated.
The development underscores ongoing inter-agency efforts to curb oil theft and illegal refining in the Niger Delta, a challenge that continues to impact Nigeria’s oil production and revenue.
