In a groundbreaking development from the National Assembly, the Nigerian Senate has exposed massive financial mismanagement in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, revealing that N5 billion was allegedly spent to change the name of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to NNPCL.

The Senate committee also summoned Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director of NNPC, to explain an unaccounted expenditure of N210 trillion, prompting serious questions about accountability and governance in the nation’s oil industry.

They used a whopping N5 billion just to change the name of NNPC to NNPCL,” a senator on the investigative panel stated, describing it as “a clear example of waste and mismanagement of public resources.”

The disclosure has reignited national debate over corruption, with citizens expressing outrage over the sheer scale of funds reportedly unaccounted for.

Some commentators have called for harsher penalties, with discussions even emerging on whether looting of public funds should carry more severe consequences.

The Senate committee said it would continue its probe and take appropriate action against any officials found culpable, signaling potential legal and political fallout.
