Diri Flags Off Prosperity Cup Season 8, Rallies Support for Grassroots Football
YENAGOA — Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially kicked off the eighth edition of the Annual Prosperity Football Cup, reiterating his administration’s resolve to strengthen grassroots sports development.
The governor performed the ceremonial kick-off at the main bowl of the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Ovom, shortly after leading the weekly Prosperity Walk alongside the newly inaugurated Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe.
Addressing participants and spectators at the event, Diri described the tournament as a cornerstone of his administration’s sports development agenda.
“Our Government of Assured Prosperity has continued to support this massive grassroots football competition and other initiatives as part of our commitment to boost sports development,” he said.
The Prosperity Football Cup, now in its eighth season, attracts teams from across the state and is widely regarded as a platform for identifying and nurturing young football talents.
Saturday’s event also marked one of the first major public outings of the new deputy governor, who joined the governor during the fitness walk that precedes the tournament’s opening ceremony — a routine the administration says is aimed at promoting healthy living and community engagement.
The state government has consistently backed the annual competition, positioning it as part of broader efforts to engage youths constructively, curb social vices and expand opportunities in sports.
Matches in the weeks ahead are expected to draw participation from various local government areas, with scouts and sports enthusiasts watching for emerging talents.
