The House of Representatives has scheduled an emergency sitting for Tuesday, February 17, following the release of the 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The development was confirmed in a statement signed by the House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi. According to the statement, members of the lower chamber were notified through an internal memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker late Friday.

The spokesperson emphasised the constitutional and national significance of the matter, noting that it requires urgent legislative attention.

The statement explained that the emergency sitting reflects the House’s resolve to respond promptly to developments with far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic process. It added that the move aligns with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly.

“All legislative business relating to the matter is expected to be addressed expeditiously. Honourable Members have been strongly advised to prioritise attendance, given the importance of the issues under consideration,” the statement read.

The House reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through responsive and responsible lawmaking, assuring Nigerians that deliberations would be guided by national interest.

INEC had announced that Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly elections will take place on March 6, 2027.

However, some stakeholders have called for a review of the dates, citing concerns that certain proposed timelines may coincide with the Ramadan fasting period, potentially affecting inclusiveness and voter participation.
