Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of committing what he described as an impeachable offence over alleged unauthorised deductions from the Federation Account.

El-Rufai made the allegation during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where he claimed that the Federal Government has been deducting ₦100 billion monthly from the Federation Account without approval from the National Assembly.

According to him, the deductions, which he said have been ongoing for more than 15 months, amount to about ₦1.5 trillion and were carried out without appropriation by both the National Assembly and the state houses of assembly, despite the fact that part of the funds belongs to the states.

He stated that such actions violate constitutional provisions and should ordinarily attract impeachment proceedings.

El-Rufai questioned the purpose of the funds, expressing concern over the worsening security situation in the country despite the huge sums allegedly withdrawn. He also criticised the government’s call for communities to take responsibility for their own security, describing it as alarming.

The former governor further lamented the state of governance, saying that if anyone had predicted the current situation during the 2022 or 2023 election campaigns, he would have found it unbelievable.

The Presidency has since reacted to El-Rufai’s comments, dismissing his claims and questioning his position on the matter, as the debate continues to stir public and political reactions nationwide.
