A medical tribunal in the UK has been told that Dr. Suhail Anjum, a consultant anaesthetist, walked out of an operating theatre at Tameside Hospital, Greater Manchester, to have sex with a nurse while a patient was under anaesthetic.

The hearing was told that Dr. Anjum requested a colleague to watch over the patient during the procedure, saying he needed a short break. Instead, he went to another operating room, where he engaged in sexual activity with Nurse C. A fellow nurse stumbled upon them in a “compromising situation” and reported what she saw.

According to Andrew Molloy, speaking for the General Medical Council (GMC), no harm came to the patient, and the procedure was completed without incident despite Dr. Anjum’s absence.

The doctor admitted the misconduct, calling it “quite shameful” and accepting full responsibility. He apologised to those affected and said the lapse in judgment happened during a stressful period in his personal life.

The tribunal is set to continue on Friday.
