The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the murder of a pregnant nurse in Umueri village, located in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
According to reports gathered by PUNCH Metro, the primary suspect currently on the run allegedly deceived the victim by pretending to need medical help. He then killed her and disposed of her mutilated remains in a soakaway pit.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest and revealed that some parts of the nurse’s body were later sold to a traditional healer in the community.
Ikenga explained that with the help of residents of Umueri, police operatives arrested Somtochukwu Nwafor on July 25, 2025. During interrogation, Nwafor admitted to being the girlfriend of the main suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who remains at large. She confessed to being summoned by Elobisi to clean up blood stains following the murder and disclosed that body parts were sold to several native doctors in the area.
Further investigations revealed that the victim, a professional nurse had been lured into Elobisi’s home under the pretext of administering treatment.
Acting on the suspect’s confession, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department raided a shrine operated by a local herbalist, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, in Itima Amawa village, Ogbunike, during the early hours of July 29, 2025. At the scene, suspected human remains were discovered hidden in nylon bags.
The police have since launched a search for Elobisi and others believed to be involved in the crime.
Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act, calling it “barbaric, unlawful, and a clear violation of human dignity.” He urged anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward, promising that all sources would be protected.
