As conversations heat up over the potential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential elections, his office has released a previously unpublished 2022 Federal High Court judgment affirming his constitutional eligibility to contest.
The judgment, delivered in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, confirmed Jonathan’s qualifications to seek the presidency, putting to rest lingering debates over his status. The case had been instituted in 2022 by two APC members in Bayelsa, who sought legal clarification amid mounting pressure from northern political blocs urging Jonathan to return to national politics.
The release of the judgment comes in response to recent comments by APC stalwart, Festus Keyamo, on Jonathan’s political future.
Although the ruling clears the legal hurdles, Jonathan’s aides stressed that he remains in a consultation phase. According to sources close to him, the former President has been approached by three political parties; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). all keen to field him as their candidate in the 2027 race.
Political analysts suggest that a Jonathan comeback could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political terrain, particularly as his candidacy might appeal to northern voters who have expressed growing dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
With the constitution allowing him to serve one more term, Jonathan’s decision is widely viewed as a critical factor that could alter the balance of power ahead of 2027.
As consultations continue, Nigerians and political observers are watching closely, with many considering Jonathan a formidable contender capable of rallying broad national support and reigniting debates about leadership, unity, and Nigeria’s democratic future.
