The African Action Congress (AAC) has demanded an investigation into the alleged misuse of ₦39 billion by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for the renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC).

In a statement issued on Saturday, AAC’s FCT Chairman, Agena Robert Ande, described the expenditure as excessive, questioning the necessity of such a massive budget for a facility that was not in a state of disrepair.

The AAC called for transparency in the project’s financial details, insisting on a comprehensive breakdown of costs, including all expenses, contracts, and subcontracts related to the renovation.

Disclosure of all contractors involved, including their names, companies, and terms of agreement.

Detailed expenditure records and receipts of all funds spent.

Clarification of contract terms, particularly any clauses that might be against public interest.

The party expressed concerns that the funds might have been diverted for political interests, particularly regarding Wike’s alleged ongoing political battle in Rivers State.

The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has claimed that the project was necessary to upgrade the facility to international standards. However, we believe that the huge sum of ₦39 billion is excessive for the renovation of a conference center that is not dilapidated,” Ande stated.

The AAC Chairman further alleged that the previous administration had already carried out major renovations on the ICC, and there was no visible justification for the newly allocated sum.

AAC urged anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.

The Nigerian people deserve to know how their hard-earned resources are being utilized. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and demand accountability from those in power,” Ande added.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has yet to respond to the allegations as calls for accountability continue to mount.
