Wike Hits Defecting Governors, Warns PDP Crisis Reflects ‘Leadership Failure
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, has sharply criticised governors who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their actions as evidence of weak leadership.
Speaking at the PDP’s 2026 convention, Wike said the defections exposed an inability among some political leaders to withstand internal party challenges. “Those who cannot manage crises within their own political space cannot be trusted with larger national responsibilities,” he said.
He argued that many of the defecting governors rose to prominence on the platform of the PDP but chose to abandon the party at a critical moment.
According to him, their exit reflects a lack of resilience and commitment to party ideals.
Wike, however, expressed confidence in the party’s capacity to recover from the setback.
He credited grassroots supporters for sustaining the PDP despite ongoing internal divisions, noting that loyal members remain determined to rebuild its political strength.
The wave of defections by several PDP governors to the APC has heightened concerns about the stability of the opposition party and its prospects ahead of future elections.
Analysts say the trend underscores deepening fractures within the PDP, even as party leaders continue to project confidence about a possible resurgence.
