US-Based Firm Seeks Trump, Congress Intervention Over INEC Action On ADC
A United States-based policy firm, Von Batten-Montague York L.C., has announced plans to engage the United States Congress and the administration of Donald Trump over recent developments involving Nigeria’s electoral body and a major opposition party.
The move follows the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend official dealings with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and withdraw recognition of its leadership pending the resolution of ongoing litigation.
In a statement released on Friday, the firm expressed concern that INEC’s action could significantly affect Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly as the country prepares for future elections.
It described the situation as one that has effectively placed a major opposition party in a state of uncertainty at a critical political period, potentially limiting its ability to organise and participate fully.
The organisation warned that such developments could undermine public confidence in the electoral system, stressing the need for transparency and independence in electoral processes.
According to the firm, any action capable of disrupting political participation or creating institutional uncertainty must be addressed urgently to preserve the credibility of elections.
The firm also noted that Nigeria remains Africa’s largest democracy and a key partner to the United States in areas such as regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism.
It argued that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system carries global significance and should attract international attention.
Von Batten-Montague York L.C. stated that it would formally present its concerns to U.S. lawmakers and relevant authorities within the Trump administration.
The firm also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that upcoming elections are conducted in a transparent and credible manner, reflecting the will of the Nigerian electorate.
The development adds an international dimension to the ongoing issues surrounding the ADC and Nigeria’s electoral process.
