The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, aimed at creating a window for negotiations to end ongoing hostilities.
Trump disclosed the development via his Truth Social platform, stating that the agreement followed high-level discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who reportedly played key roles in facilitating the temporary truce.
According to Trump, the ceasefire is conditional on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for international oil and commodity shipments.
He explained that the suspension of military action by Washington would last for two weeks, allowing both sides to finalise negotiations toward a broader peace agreement.
The US president stated that American forces had already achieved their military objectives and that talks were advancing toward a long-term resolution.
He also revealed that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which is being considered as a framework for a lasting settlement.
According to him, most contentious issues between both countries have already been addressed, with the remaining period expected to help conclude the agreement.
Reports indicate that Israel has also agreed to the temporary ceasefire, halting its military operations in support of the diplomatic process.
On its part, Iranian authorities described the development as a significant diplomatic victory, claiming the agreement reflects acceptance of its negotiation framework by the United States.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated that the ceasefire followed what it described as a major setback for Washington in the conflict.
The council further noted that the proposed agreement includes provisions for regulated passage through the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian coordination, alongside discussions on lifting certain sanctions imposed on the country.
The ceasefire, announced shortly before the expiration of an earlier US deadline for military action, is seen as a crucial step toward de-escalating tensions and restoring stability in the Middle East.
Observers say the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether both nations can translate the temporary truce into a lasting peace agreement.
