TRAGEDY IN PLATEAU: DOZENS FEARED DEAD IN MINING GAS LEAK IN WASE LGA
Many people have reportedly died following a suspected gas leak at a mining site in Company Zurak, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at an underground zinc mining operation, where workers were exposed to a dangerous gas while digging deep into the ground.
The Youth Leader of Wase, Shafi Sambo, said he received early reports of the tragedy due to his community role. He confirmed that 37 miners reportedly died instantly after inhaling the gas, while some were rescued alive and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The total number of survivors remains unclear.
The mining site is believed to be operated by a company owned by Chinese investors, though the details have yet to be independently verified.
Following the incident, the Nigerian Army sealed off the area to prevent further exposure and maintain order. Security personnel were deployed to manage the scene and restrict access to the affected site.
Authorities have yet to release an official casualty figure, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the gas leak.
