Tinubu’s Promise Failed Within 24 Hours; Peter Obi Slams Fresh Wave Of Attacks
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the worsening security situation in the country, following a series of fresh attacks across multiple states.
Obi’s reaction comes shortly after Tinubu’s visit to Plateau State, where the President assured residents that recent violent attacks would not recur.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi argued that events following the President’s assurance contradict the promise, noting that violence has continued unabated.
He referenced a deadly attack in Nyamgo Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area, where several lives were lost less than 24 hours after the President’s visit.
The former Anambra governor also highlighted incidents in Nasarawa State, where communities such as Akyawa and Udege Kasa were reportedly attacked, leading to multiple deaths and displacement of residents.
Further citing developments in Zamfara State, Obi pointed to the abduction of about 150 persons in what he described as one of the largest recent mass kidnappings.
He also mentioned attacks in Borno State, Benue State, and Kaduna State, where killings, destruction of property, and abductions have continued to occur.
Describing the situation as dire, Obi said the country is facing a national emergency, stressing that citizens are no longer safe in their homes, communities, or even places of worship.
“Less than 24 hours after the President’s promise, Nigerians are still counting their dead across multiple states,” he stated.
He argued that the continued attacks reflect a failure in the government’s primary responsibility to protect lives and property.
Obi warned that the persistence of insecurity could further destabilise the country if not urgently addressed, adding that the attackers are emboldened by what he described as inadequate response.
He called for decisive leadership and immediate action to halt the wave of violence, insisting that safeguarding citizens must remain the top priority of government at all levels.
The former presidential candidate concluded by urging authorities to treat the situation as a national emergency and take concrete steps to restore security and public confidence across Nigeria.
