On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu extended his congratulations to the global Catholic community and especially to Nigerian Catholics on the historic election of American-born Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost as the 267th Pope, now known as Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed joy over the selection by the College of Cardinals, emphasizing that Pope Leo’s early message of hope and faith already inspires many worldwide. He noted the spiritual reassurance the new Pontiff brings during a time when the world deeply desires peace.

The President also highlighted the longstanding and fruitful relationship between Nigeria and the Vatican, particularly praising the Catholic Church’s role in promoting peace, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and more recently, technology-driven human development in the country.
President Tinubu expressed optimism that Pope Leo XIV’s leadership would usher in a renewed commitment to the Church’s core values of compassion, love, and service to the less privileged. He offered prayers for divine guidance, strength, and good health for the new Pope, trusting he will be a beacon of unity and peace across the globe.
Cardinal Prevost’s election marks a historic milestone as he becomes the first Pope from the United States. His inaugural address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica drew enthusiastic support from tens of thousands gathered. With a message centered on peace, dialogue, and unity, Pope Leo urged people around the world to come together as one community.
The Pope, who served extensively in Peru, also spoke in Spanish during his address and honored his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, recalling his enduring voice and legacy. Pope Leo emphasized the Church’s mission to be open, inclusive, and focused on building bridges through meaningful engagement.
