Thousands Set to Storm Abuja as #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Online Movement Gains Massive Traction
The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement has launched its online campaign, setting the stage for a nationwide protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on October 20, 2025.
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore announced the kickoff on X (formerly Twitter), urging Nigerians and supporters across the world to take the agitation for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release to all online platforms.
Sowore stated that the aim of the campaign is to keep the call for Kanu’s freedom alive and visible until the government ends what he described as his “unlawful detention.”
“From today, the internet becomes our rally ground, a united digital front for freedom and conscience,” he declared.
“We are online, we are everywhere, and we are unstoppable.”
Participants have been encouraged to flood social media including X, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, with posts, hashtags, and messages amplifying the demand for Kanu’s release.
Sowore explained that the digital mobilisation will build momentum ahead of the physical protest in Abuja on October 20, where demonstrators will call for justice and freedom for the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.
The online movement has already attracted wide support, with citizens and activists backing the call for the government to release Kanu, who has been in custody despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has also announced plans to hold a nationwide protest on the same date.
In a statement signed by NANS National President, Comrade Atiku Isah, and dated October 13, 2025, the body said students from all six geopolitical zones will converge in Abuja for the demonstration tagged “Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
According to the plan, students from each zone will assemble at designated points before proceeding to the capital city.
NANS revealed that ten buses have been allocated to each zone to aid transportation, while Students’ Union Government (SUG) presidents will coordinate logistics and mobilisation efforts across campuses.
The protest, the association said, is aimed at ensuring “justice, equity, and freedom” for Nnamdi Kanu, and reaffirming the students’ commitment to defending human rights and the rule of law.
