Tambuwal Abandons PDP, Bolsters ADC’s National Ambitions
In a dramatic twist in Nigeria’s political theatre, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with his loyal political machinery and supporters.
The development, confirmed in a letter dated 11th March 2026 to his ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward, Sokoto State, signals a major realignment in the country’s political landscape, particularly in the North West.
Tambuwal cited protracted internal crises, leadership tussles, and growing factionalism within the PDP as key drivers of his departure.
“After deep reflection and consultations with my political associates and supporters, I have concluded that the ongoing conflicts within the PDP have eroded the unity and direction that once defined the party,” Tambuwal wrote, highlighting the internal schisms that have plagued the party ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
Tambuwal’s resignation is set to weaken the PDP’s political foothold in Sokoto and could trigger a cascade of defections, given his influence and grassroots network.
Analysts note that the move also boosts the ADC’s profile, positioning the party as a viable alternative amid dissatisfaction with the country’s dominant political structures.
Despite leaving, Tambuwal acknowledged the PDP for enabling his public service trajectory, which includes his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives and his second term as Governor of Sokoto State.
He emphasized that his switch to the ADC reflects a commitment to political integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and the pursuit of national development, asserting:
“I remain devoted to the service of Nigeria and to the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity.”
Political watchers describe Tambuwal’s defection as a strategic recalibration, with potential implications for party alliances, regional power dynamics, and the shape of Nigeria’s political contest in the coming years.
As the PDP grapples with internal fragmentation, the ADC emerges as a magnet for disaffected leaders and voters seeking a new political direction.
The next few months could see Tambuwal’s move reshaping the balance of power in Sokoto State and beyond, setting the stage for high-stakes political maneuvers ahead of national elections.
