The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced August 30 as the new date for the 2025 local government elections.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has shifted the local council election originally slated for August 9 to Saturday, August 30, 2025.
RSIEC Chairman Michael Odey announced the change on Monday during a stakeholder meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, where the updated timetable and regulations for the polls were presented.
He explained that the adjustment became necessary due to the state of emergency declared in the state, which disrupted earlier preparations.
Odey added that the revised schedule outlines new timelines for political party primaries, candidate screening, campaign activities, and the main election.
Representatives of political parties, election observers, and the media attended the meeting to review and deliberate on the updated electoral guidelines.
