Sowore Unveils 14 Key Demands Ahead of ‘Days of Rage’ Protests Against Tinubu’s Administration
Omoyele Sowore, the leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, has announced 14 critical demands from Nigerians directed at President Bola Tinubu’s administration. These demands are part of preparations for the upcoming ‘Days of Rage’ protests, set to occur from late July to August 2024. Sowore’s list of demands, shared via his X account, reflects inputs from Nigerians involved in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria campaign.
The 14 demands are as follows:
1. Scrap the 1999 Constitution: Replace it with a new, people-crafted constitution through a Sovereign National Conference and a subsequent National Referendum.
2. Revise the Legislative System: Abolish the Senate, retain the House of Representatives, and make lawmaking a part-time role.
3. Increase Minimum Wage: Set the minimum wage for Nigerian workers at N250,000 monthly.
4. Invest in Education: Provide grants rather than loans for students, and pursue free and compulsory education for all children in Nigeria.
5. Release Nnamdi Kanu: Unconditionally free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and demilitarize the South East region.
6. Renationalize Public Enterprises: Return publicly owned enterprises sold to government officials and their associates to public ownership.
7. Reinstate Subsidy Regime: Implement a corruption-free subsidy regime to combat hunger and poverty.
8. Probe and Recover Looted Funds: Investigate past and current leaders for embezzlement, recover stolen funds, and allocate them to education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
9. Restructure Nigeria: Adjust the structure to better accommodate diversity, resource control, decentralization, and regional development.
10. Reform Security Agencies: Address human rights violations, reduce duplication of agencies, and enhance citizen security.
11. Establish an Energy Fund: Create a Special Energy Fund to drive development in the power sector without corruption.
12. Reconstitute INEC: Overhaul the Independent National Electoral Commission to remove corrupt individuals and ensure fair elections.
13. Invest in Public Works and Industrialization: Focus on projects that will provide employment opportunities for the youth.
14. Reform the Judiciary: Overhaul the judiciary to eliminate corruption and ensure justice for citizens.
Sowore’s protests are planned to mark the fifth anniversary of the 2019 #RevolutionNow demonstration, and he is calling for widespread participation and support for the movement.
