Abuja — Human rights crusader and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has renewed calls for the unconditional release of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued detention as unjust and politically motivated.

Speaking in Abuja, Sowore said Kanu’s case has gone beyond regional sentiment, arguing that it reflects Nigeria’s failure to confront decades of political and ethnic inequality.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention today because he chose to stand up against marginalization in Nigeria,” Sowore declared. “Like other activists whose politically driven cases have been dropped, Kanu too deserves his freedom without further delay.”

The activist appealed to influential figures across the country especially from the South East, to join the campaign for Kanu’s release. He specifically mentioned Peter Obi, Charles Soludo, Alex Otti, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodinma, Obiageli Ezekwesili, and John Mbata of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, urging them to rise above politics and unite for justice.

“I call on political, cultural, and religious leaders everywhere to stand on the side of truth. Let us speak with one voice for justice and freedom,” he said.

Reaffirming his peaceful approach, Sowore pledged to continue mobilising for Kanu’s release through nonviolent means.

Nnamdi Kanu should be released immediately. I will continue to mobilise peacefully for justice and freedom until this injustice ends,” he vowed.

His comments come amid a wave of renewed pressure from civil rights groups, political figures, and international observers demanding that the Federal Government comply with existing court orders granting Kanu bail.

Sowore also announced that a nationwide peaceful march tagged #FreeNnamdiKanu will take place on October 20, culminating at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He said the march would be a test of Nigeria’s commitment to rule of law and democratic tolerance.

Observers note that the call adds fresh momentum to a growing movement pressing for reconciliation and respect for human rights across the federation.
