SENATE CONFIRMS JUSTICE JOSEPH OYEWOLE AS SUPREME COURT JUSTICE
The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole (JCA) as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation came on Tuesday following the presentation and consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).
Presenting the committee’s report, Senator Adegbonmire stated that Justice Oyewole was found to be qualified, competent, and suitable for appointment to the apex court.
“That the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters on the confirmation of the nomination of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” Adegbonmire said.
President Bola Tinubu had last week forwarded a letter to the Senate seeking the confirmation of Justice Oyewole’s appointment, citing Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the nomination.
The letter, read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, read in part:
“Pursuant to Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Hon. Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
Following the President’s request, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening and legislative scrutiny.
After examining the nominee’s credentials, judicial track record, and responses during the screening process, the committee recommended his confirmation.
The Senate subsequently adopted the report unanimously, thereby confirming Justice Oyewole’s elevation to Nigeria’s highest court.
