Police detectives in Ondo State have taken Adekolajo Aladeseyi into custody for allegedly proclaiming himself as the Olujare of Ijare in Ifedore Local Government Area without official approval.

Aladeseyi, along with four other individuals identified as chiefs, was arrested on the directive of the state government. Reports indicate that the unauthorized coronation occurred on April 17, 2025, and Aladeseyi was set to begin a 30-day traditional rite before law enforcement intervened.

The Olujare throne, recognized as a first-class kingship role, has remained unoccupied since the passing of Oba Adebamigbe Oluwagbemigun four years ago.

Confirming the arrests, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Olutokunbo Afolabi, stated that the action was taken to maintain peace and order within the community. He added that the installation process lacked legal backing and did not receive the necessary endorsements from the local or state government.

The four additional suspects involved in the incident were also detained, and the police have confirmed they will face legal proceedings.

It’s worth noting that some local kingmakers had earlier voiced concerns about Aladeseyi’s selection, labeling the process as illegitimate and deceptive.
