Following the Supreme Court’s judgment on Friday, which nullified the local government elections held in the state on October 5, 2024, Governor Fubara addressed the public in a state broadcast on Sunday. He disclosed that he had consulted with his legal team, who anticipate obtaining the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the ruling by Friday, March 7, 2025.

Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to constitutional principles and assured that all actions would align with the law. In response to the court’s decision, he directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume control of the 23 local government councils until fresh elections are conducted by the State Electoral Commission. He further instructed outgoing chairmen to officially hand over to the HLGAs by Monday. Amid ongoing political tensions, the governor urged residents to remain calm, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to governance and due process.

In a separate ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other relevant agencies from disbursing funds to the Rivers State government until it complies with previous court orders. Delivering the judgment, Justice Emmanuel Akomaye led a five-member panel that unanimously dismissed Governor Fubara’s cross-appeal, which challenged the legitimacy of the House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule as Speaker. Consequently, the court ordered Amaewhule and other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume legislative activities immediately.
