The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly rejected reported moves by the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, warning that such actions could destabilise the state.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party leadership said it had taken note of what it described as “unfortunate developments” emanating from the State House of Assembly.

While acknowledging that the legislature is an independent arm of government with constitutional oversight responsibilities, the APC maintained that impeachment should not be used as a political weapon, especially in the absence of grave constitutional breaches.

The party expressed concern that unresolved internal disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were being allowed to spill over and threaten the stability of an APC-led government in Rivers State.

According to the APC, the impeachment threat is reportedly linked to budgetary disagreements, which it argued do not warrant such an extreme legislative action.

The party recalled that during the period of emergency governance in the state, a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2025.

It noted that the budget was subsequently approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, with a total allocation of ₦1.485 trillion.

The APC explained that the approved budget was structured to cover a one-year period, running until August 2026.

According to the party, the governor is not constitutionally obligated to present a supplementary budget if the existing appropriation sufficiently meets the state’s financial needs.

The party further emphasised that the Constitution allows a governor to continue expenditure for up to six months into a new fiscal year, insisting that the impeachment threat lacks both legal and moral justification.

Calling on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly; particularly those elected on the APC platform, the party urged them to resist what it described as external pressure aimed at undermining the state government.

“We will do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government of Rivers State is not destabilised through internal disagreements or political manoeuvring,” the statement said.

The Rivers APC warned that proceeding with impeachment could damage the party’s image, derail governance, and disrupt ongoing development efforts across the state.

The party urged all political actors to uphold democratic principles, prioritise governance, and allow peace and stability to prevail in Rivers State.
