The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has called for the resignation of Governor Siminalayi Fubara within 48 hours or face impeachment proceedings.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, Tony Okocha, chairman of the Rivers APC, declared that the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on the state’s political crisis is conclusive and must be respected.
Okocha described the governor’s invitation to the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly as a “Greek gift,” emphasizing that the legal pronouncement by the apex court cannot be reversed. “The Supreme Court judgment is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the governor now is for him to resign or be impeached,” he stated.
The Supreme Court, in its February 28 ruling, upheld a Federal High Court decision barring the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the accountant-general of the federation from disbursing statutory allocations to the Rivers State government. Additionally, the court nullified the local government elections held on October 5, 2024, and ordered the Amaewhule-led lawmakers to resume legislative activities.
Following the ruling, the 27 lawmakers loyal to former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, reconvened and requested Governor Fubara to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill for deliberation.
In response, Governor Fubara, through a letter dated March 7 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, invited the lawmakers for a meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday. The letter acknowledged the Supreme Court’s verdict and sought a resolution to the lingering political impasse.
The political tension in Rivers State continues to escalate as stakeholders closely monitor the unfolding developments. The next few days will determine whether Governor Fubara will heed the APC’s call or brace for an impeachment showdown.
