The United Global Resolve for Peace (UGRFP) has called on the Ondo State Government to urgently address the worsening condition of the Akure Township Stadium, citing its negative impact on Sunshine Stars FC and their supporters.

Due to prolonged neglect, the club has been forced to play its home matches outside the state, particularly at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State. This situation has affected team morale and weakened community support.

In a letter dated February 24, 2025, and addressed to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the Ondo State House of Assembly, and the Ondo State Sports Council, UGRFP expressed its disappointment over the stadium’s deterioration. The letter, signed by National Coordinator Comrade Olaseni Shalom, stressed the urgent need for renovations and maintenance.

The organization warned that relocating home games deprives the team of crucial local backing, reducing the connection between the club and its supporters. UGRFP also raised concerns about the security risks associated with frequent travel, as well as the increased costs of transportation, lodging, and training in another state. They argued that these funds could be better allocated to player welfare and development if matches were held in Akure.

Describing the situation as a blemish on Ondo State’s reputation and a reflection of the government’s commitment to sports development, UGRFP urged a comprehensive stadium assessment, a public commitment with a renovation timeline, and regular progress updates.

The group emphasized the need for immediate intervention to restore not only the stadium but also the football club’s status and community pride.

The letter stated: **“We, the undersigned members of the United Global Resolve for Peace (UGRFP), write with deep disappointment to bring to Your Excellency’s attention the deplorable state of the Akure Township Stadium, which has remained in disrepair for over a year.

“This neglect has forced Sunshine Stars FC to play their supposed home matches in distant stadiums, an unacceptable situation that demands urgent intervention.

“Hosting matches away from Akure robs the team of the psychological and strategic advantages of playing on familiar ground.

“Dedicated supporters are also denied the opportunity to cheer for their team at home, weakening the crucial bond that fuels success.

“The current state of affairs does a great disservice to Sunshine Stars FC, the people of Ondo State, and the future of football in our region. We cannot stand idly by while the team’s potential is stifled by negligence. The time to act is now.
