Nyesom Wike the FCT minister, has ruled out the possibility of reconciling with Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara. Wike criticized Fubara and his supporters for failing to follow through with President Bola Tinubu’s directives issued during a peace meeting he convened.
In 2023, Fubara and Wike’s factions had signed an eight-point peace agreement mediated by President Tinubu and other key figures at a significant meeting in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. However, the agreement fell apart, with Fubara claiming he had been pressured into signing the deal with Wike’s group.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, Wike stated that Fubara and his allies should have gone back to President Tinubu to explain why they were unable to follow through with some parts of the agreement. He remarked, “I’m puzzled. What conflict is there to resolve? Mr. President, in his wisdom, called everyone together. He outlined the problem and asked for resolution, with everyone agreeing to the terms.”
“The Assembly withdrew the impeachment notice, and some steps were taken, but then people went to court. Have you gone back to Mr. President to explain that we’ve done steps one and two but can’t proceed with steps three and four? Can he bring us back to find a solution?”
Wike expressed disbelief, stating, “I’ve never seen this before where a president calls parties together, and one party then claims it’s political, non-binding, and unconstitutional. Who does that?”
The tension between Wike and Fubara began months after Fubara assumed office as governor, reportedly over disputes concerning control of the state’s political resources.
