The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, emphasized his administration’s commitment to a zero waste philosophy by implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme. This initiative requires manufacturers to manage the recycling of their products. Aiyedatiwa made these remarks during a summit organized by the State Environmental Protection Agency (OSEPA) in Akure, focusing on the theme “Combating the Menace of Plastic Pollution: Consolidation Time 3.0.”

He highlighted the global challenge of plastic pollution, which poses significant threats to ecosystems and human health. He also expressed concern about the practice of dumping waste in waterways, which leads to blockages from plastics and other non-biodegradable materials. As part of the state’s response, he noted that they have acquired amphibious excavators for each senatorial district to dredge waterways and canals, ensuring proper water flow and safeguarding lives and property.

The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Razak Salako, affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing issues like sea incursion affecting riverine communities in the state. He noted ongoing collaboration with the state government to tackle various environmental challenges and praised the state’s efforts toward creating a cleaner environment. The Governor’s Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Adeyemi Olayemi, also acknowledged the government’s initiatives aimed at making Ondo State more environmentally friendly for its residents.
