Police Foil Suspected Bomb Plot at Bayelsa Government Complex

Yenagoa, February 11, 2026 — Tension gripped the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa on this morning after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated within the premises, prompting a swift security response that led to the discovery and neutralisation of another unexploded device.

The incident occurred at about 6:00 a.m., according to the Bayelsa State Police Command.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, the Command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, personally led a joint team comprising the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit and other tactical operatives to the scene.

The Bayelsa State Police Command wish to inform the general public of a suspected IED explosion which occurred today, 11th February 2026, at about 0600hrs within the State Secretariat Complex,” the statement said.

Security operatives immediately cordoned off the area to prevent panic and ensure public safety. During a thorough sweep of the complex, the EOD team discovered a second unexploded IED, which was successfully rendered safe.

Police authorities confirmed that no casualties were recorded and no property was damaged in the incident.

A 60-year-old man, identified as Pentecost Elijah from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was arrested at the scene in connection with the explosion.

He is currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, police said.

The Command assured residents that the situation has been brought under control and normalcy restored, while urging members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the incident as investigations continue.
