Petrol saga: Residents risk life scooping fuel from fallen tanker
A viral video shows numerous residents in Cross River scooping fuel from a fallen tanker in the Akamkpa Local Government Area. The footage, shared by journalist Agba Jalingo, depicts people filling buckets with petrol while a police vehicle is nearby, indicating that security personnel did nothing to prevent this dangerous activity. This incident follows closely after a tragedy in Jigawa State, where 181 people died in a similar situation. That accident occurred when a fuel tanker overturned, leading to a massive explosion as villagers collected fuel. Jigawa’s Governor, Umar Namadi, reported the fatalities and stated that his administration has formed a committee, led by a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, to investigate the explosion’s circumstances.
