PDP HEAVYWEIGHTS SET TO DEFECT TO ADC AMID DEEPENING PARTY CRISIS
Fresh indications have emerged that several prominent chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are preparing to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following growing discontent within the opposition party.
According to reliable sources within the PDP, negotiations between some of its top members and the ADC leadership have reached advanced stages, with formal announcements expected in the coming days.
The planned defections reportedly involve key stakeholders from multiple states who have lost confidence in the PDP’s ability to resolve its lingering internal crises.
A senior PDP official familiar with the discussions disclosed that many of those considering the move view the ADC as “a more stable and ideologically coherent platform” to pursue their political ambitions.
“There is growing frustration. Many leaders feel the PDP has not shown the capacity to resolve its internal challenges, and they are now exploring alternatives,” the source said.
This development comes just days after a faction of the PDP, led by former Minister Kabiru Turaki, held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan at his Maitama residence in Abuja.
While details of the meeting remain undisclosed, political observers believe it may be connected to ongoing efforts to reposition the party amid its deepening divisions.
The Turaki-led faction is reportedly aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, while another faction, chaired by Abdulrahman Mohammed, is loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stepped up its efforts to attract influential politicians, holding a series of strategic consultations with stakeholders across party lines.
An ADC national officer confirmed ongoing engagements but emphasized that only politicians who align with the party’s principles would be admitted.
“We are open to partnerships and new members, but we remain committed to discipline, ideology, and internal democracy,” the official said.
In response to the reports, the PDP leadership has downplayed fears of mass defections, maintaining that the party remains strong despite current challenges.
A senior member of the party reaffirmed confidence in the PDP’s capacity to rebound, stating that the leadership is taking deliberate steps to address grievances and unify its ranks.
