Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian flag, has been honored one year after his passing. The Oyo State acting governor, Mr. Bayo Lawal, praised Akinkunmi as a source of pride for Nigeria and the global community during the memorial service held on Friday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan. Akinkunmi, who passed away on August 29, 2023, at age 87, left behind a lasting legacy through the national flag that is displayed in Nigerian embassies worldwide.

Lawal emphasized that the flag symbolizes both the nation’s agricultural wealth and its commitment to peace. He noted that the Green represents Nigeria’s natural resources, while the White signifies peace and tranquility. According to Lawal, maintaining peace is crucial for the nation’s progress and unity, and Akinkunmi’s design serves as a continual reminder of these values.
