The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has announced Saturday, January 16, 2027, as the date for the next local government elections across the state.

Naija News reports that the elections will be conducted in all polling units across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State, with voting scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. on election day.

The decision was reached at the conclusion of the commission’s first management meeting, held at the OYSIEC headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan.

The meeting was presided over by the Chairman of the commission, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, and focused on strategic planning and idea-sharing to ensure the smooth conduct of the council polls.

OYSIEC also announced that political campaigns will officially end at midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027.

In the event of any supplementary or re-run election, the commission stated that such exercise would be conducted on Saturday, January 23, 2027.

The commission further disclosed that the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors in the 33 local government councils will expire on May 23, 2027, in accordance with the existing local government law of the state.

OYSIEC explained that the announcement was made pursuant to the powers conferred on it by relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law, which mandate early notice of elections.

The commission called on political parties, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders to cooperate fully with OYSIEC to ensure a peaceful, credible and successful local government election in January 2027.
