The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged victorious in all 30 local government areas of Osun State in the just-concluded local government elections, securing every chairmanship and councillorship position in a sweeping win.

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), led by Hashim Abioye, proceeded with the elections despite strong objections from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, and warnings from the police over alleged security threats.

The AGF had earlier argued that a February 10 Court of Appeal verdict reinstated All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen who were removed from office in 2022. However, OSSIEC moved forward with the polls, ignoring legal concerns and potential court challenges.

On the security front, the police claimed to have received intelligence reports warning of possible unrest, yet the elections proceeded smoothly, raising questions about the credibility of their warnings.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, popularly known as the “Dancing Governor,” has yet another reason to celebrate, as his party now controls all local government councils in the state. With this clean sweep, PDP has further solidified its grip on Osun’s political landscape.

With the AGF and the APC camp expected to challenge the elections in court, political tensions in Osun State may continue to rise. However, for now, the PDP stands unchallenged in its dominance of the local government system.
