OPOBO KINGDOM ENTERS NEW ERA AS AMAYANABO-ELECT ADDRESSES TRADITIONAL COUNCIL
The Amayanabo-Elect of Opobo Kingdom, His Majesty King-Elect Charles Douglas Macpepple-Jaja, has pledged to uphold the heritage of the ancient kingdom while pursuing sustainable development, youth empowerment, and transparent governance.
King-Elect Macpepple-Jaja made the pledge in a statement dated Friday, January 3, 2026, while addressing members of the Opobo Council of Alapu during his formal presentation by the King Jaja Group at the Opuwariku-King Jaja Palace Complex, Opobo Kingdom.
Describing the moment as the beginning of a new chapter in Opobo history, the Amayanabo-Elect said he was humbled by the responsibility of the noble office and committed to upholding the trust reposed in him by the kingdom.

He noted that Opobo Kingdom is endowed with a rich cultural heritage and resilient people, stressing that development must be pursued in a manner that preserves the kingdom’s unique identity, traditions, and way of life.
According to him, his leadership will prioritize sustainable growth, responsible use of resources, and environmental protection to safeguard the future of coming generations. He added that preserving and transmitting Opobo’s cultural heritage to children and grandchildren remains a core responsibility of the throne.
The Amayanabo-Elect identified youth development as a key pillar of his vision, pledging to invest in education, skills acquisition, and empowerment programmes that will prepare young people to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
To further strengthen cultural preservation, he disclosed plans to document and promote Opobo traditions, establish cultural centres, encourage wider use of the Ibani language in domestic and local systems, and facilitate cultural exchange programmes with the ancient Kingdom of Bonny to enhance cross-cultural understanding.
King-Elect Macpepple-Jaja also announced proposed institutional reforms aimed at improving effectiveness, transparency, and accountability in the administration of the kingdom. He said decision-making within the Council of Alapu would be decentralized, with clearer assignment of roles and responsibilities.
Drawing inspiration from the founder of Opobo Kingdom, King Jaja the Great, the Amayanabo-Elect said his reign would reflect courage, resilience, and pride in heritage, emphasizing that the kingdom would continue to stand firm in defence of its identity and autonomy.
He further pledged to work closely with the Opobo Local Government, the Rivers State Government, and the Federal Government to ensure coordinated development efforts. He also expressed readiness to engage multinational corporations to leverage expertise, resources, and global networks for the growth and development of Opobo Kingdom.
