The Joint Action Committee (JAC) representing staff of Ondo State-owned tertiary institutions has called off its 14-day warning strike following a closed-door meeting with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure.
The strike, which began last month, was prompted by grievances over poor conditions in the institutions and the state government’s failure to implement the national minimum wage for academic and non-academic workers. Other concerns included unpaid salary arrears, outstanding gratuities for retirees, and six months of withheld wages.
JAC, comprising members of SSANU, NASU, NAAT, and SSANIP, announced the suspension of the strike in a joint statement signed by Chairman Tayo Ogungbeni and Secretary Kunle Akinwonmi.
The decision followed key agreements with the governor, including the immediate disbursement of the final tranche of the wage award and approval for payment of the outstanding January 2017 subventions to the state’s three universities, aimed at settling part of the salary arrears.
Additional resolutions reached include plans to raise the monthly subventions to the institutions, contingent upon a thorough review of their financial records. The government also requested cooperation from the unions in deploying technology to track income and expenditures within the institutions.
“In light of the agreements reached and the directive from the governor instructing the Commissioner of Finance and the State Accountant General to ensure full implementation by Tuesday, July 15, 2025, we hereby instruct all members across the affected institutions to resume work immediately,” the statement concluded.
