Ondo REC denies clandestine meetings reacts to group calls
On September 27, 2024, youth groups represented by their lawyers Adeniyi Farinto & Co, submitted a petition to INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, expressing concerns about the actions of Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State. The group protested, alleging that her interactions with local politicians jeopardize the integrity of the upcoming governorship election.
During the protest, spokesperson Ijanusi Olawale claimed Mrs. Babalola was “romancing” certain political parties and called for her removal to protect the election’s credibility. The petition accused her of associating closely with the incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the State Chairman of the APC, Ade Adetimeyin. It noted her appointment on December 18, 2023, in preparation for the November 16, 2024, election.
In response, Mrs. Babalola denied any wrongdoing, stating that her engagements were with all political parties and insisting she had not held secret meetings with any political figures. She emphasized her commitment to a free, fair, and credible election, asserting her impartiality and open-door policy.
Biodun Amosu, INEC’s Administrative Secretary in Ondo State, addressed the protesters, acknowledging their right to peaceful demonstration and assuring them that their concerns would be taken seriously by the INEC Chairman. He encouraged collaboration and emphasized that the election process would ensure that every vote counts.
