Ondo PDP Demands Resignation of Attorney-General, Calls Him Unfit to Advise Governor Aiyedatiwa
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ondo State chapter has criticized the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, over his support for the appointment of transition committees for the state’s 18 local governments and 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). The opposition party has called for Ajulo’s immediate resignation, stating that his stance contradicts a recent Supreme Court ruling.
The PDP asserts that Ajulo should have advised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa against the appointments, which the party claims are illegal. According to the PDP, Ajulo’s position shows a lack of understanding of the law, making him unfit for his role as the state’s chief legal officer.
On Thursday, Ajulo stated that the appointment of the transition committees was within the governor’s constitutional rights, just hours after the Supreme Court’s landmark judgement granting full autonomy to local governments. This statement has provoked strong reactions from the PDP, who argue that it contradicts the verdict delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim. The judgement emphasized the sacrosanct nature of democratically elected local government councils, condemning the trend of state governments appointing loyalists instead.
In a statement issued by its publicity secretary, the PDP highlighted the contradiction between the Supreme Court’s ruling and Ajulo’s position. The party expressed dismay over Ajulo’s attempt to legitimize what they consider an illegal act by the governor on the same day as the Supreme Court ruling.
“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ondo State Chapter calls for the immediate resignation of Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo, for violating his oath of office,” the statement read.
The PDP warned those appointed to the transition committees not to accept the positions, emphasizing that any funds spent in these roles would be legally reclaimed. The party concluded by urging Ajulo to step down if he cannot provide lawful advice to the governor.
