To celebrate Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted amnesty to 117 convicts serving various sentences. This act reflects compassion and a commitment to justice, aiming to reform the lives of those affected.

According to a statement from Chief Press Secretary Ebenezer Adeniyan, the initiative stems from recommendations by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, emphasizing rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system.

The announcement reveals that 19 convicts will be fully released, while others will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Additionally, several inmates will see their sentences reduced, offering them renewed hope for reintegration into society.

This decision was officially communicated by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the State Attorney General and Chairman of the Advisory Council, who noted that the Governor signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, to take effect on October 1, coinciding with the independence celebrations.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions align with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. The Advisory Council carefully evaluated each application, adhering to established guidelines while considering various factors.

Dr. Ajulo stated that the Council’s discussions were informed by input from correctional authorities, legal experts, and community leaders, focusing on the nature of offenses, length of sentences, age, health, and behavior of the inmates.

This compassionate gesture highlights Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to reducing overcrowding in correctional facilities in Ondo State and is part of ongoing Justice Sector Reforms. The approved releases not only signify mercy but also reinforce the belief in the potential for change and redemption in every individual.
