Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has honoured Super Falcons defender, Tosin Demehin, with a ₦30 million cash gift and a house in recognition of her exceptional performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The announcement was made on Monday during a civic reception in Akure to celebrate the Ondo State natives who contributed to Nigeria’s success at the tournament held in Morocco.
In addition to Demehin’s reward, the governor also presented ₦15 million each to the team’s media officer, Mary Akinsola, and secretary, Mary Oduboku, for their vital roles in the national team’s triumph.
“This is a moment of great pride for Ondo State. Tosin Demehin has represented us with honour on the continental stage,” Aiyedatiwa said. “We are showing our appreciation with a ₦30 million reward and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile.”
The governor described Demehin, a native of Ilaje Local Government Area, as a symbol of excellence, discipline, and determination. He praised the entire team for their commitment and success, saying they brought not just national glory but honour to the state.
Aiyedatiwa also commended Akinsola and Oduboku, both from the southern senatorial district, for their behind-the-scenes support throughout the tournament.
Reiterating his government’s dedication to youth and sports development, the governor promised continued investment in talent discovery, infrastructure, and athlete welfare across the state.
He further assured strong backing for the Sunshine Stars Football Club to facilitate their return to the Nigerian Premier League.
The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for recognising the Super Falcons at the national level, stating that such recognition boosts athlete morale across the country.
In her response, Tosin Demehin thanked the governor and people of Ondo State for the warm welcome and generous gesture.
“This means so much to me,” she said. “As someone who played for Sunshine Queens, I know the level of talent here. This support sends a powerful message to young girls that their dreams are valid.”
She also encouraged increased support for women’s football in the state, emphasizing that the growth of the sport, both male and female requires collective effort from all stakeholders.
