Obidient Movement Demands INEC Chairman’s Resignation, Announces Nationwide Protest
The Obidient Movement has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, over recent developments concerning the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress.
In a statement released on Thursday, the group described the situation as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic system and announced plans for a nationwide protest.
The movement accused INEC of losing its neutrality, alleging that the electoral body is increasingly being perceived as compromised.
“There are moments in the life of a nation when silence becomes dangerous, and inaction becomes complicity. Nigeria has arrived at such a moment,” the statement read.
According to the group, the credibility of democratic institutions is being eroded, raising concerns about the integrity of the country’s electoral process.
Among its key demands, the Obidient Movement called for the immediate resignation of the INEC chairman, citing what it described as a loss of public trust and failure to maintain impartiality.
The group also demanded an end to alleged political intimidation and harassment of opposition voices, stressing the need to protect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
It further urged authorities to respect the autonomy of political parties, particularly in matters relating to internal leadership and governance.
As part of its response, the movement announced a nationwide protest tagged #OccupyINEC, which is expected to take place across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The group said the protest would be peaceful and aimed at defending democratic principles and ensuring accountability within key national institutions.
It warned Nigerians against remaining silent, stating that citizen engagement is essential in safeguarding the country’s democratic future.
