Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been spotted in African Democratic Congress (ADC) colours, fuelling speculation that he has dumped the Labour Party.
Obi, who was seen wearing an ADC-branded cap, was campaigning in Onitsha for Justina Azuka, the party’s candidate in the Onitsha North State Constituency by-election scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025.
Although Obi has yet to officially announce his defection, sources indicate that he could formally join the ADC in the coming days.
Mrs. Azuka, widow of the late Labour Party legislator for Onitsha North, entered the race under the ADC platform after her husband’s brutal killing last December. The lawmaker was abducted on December 24, 2024, in Onitsha and his body was discovered on February 6, 2025, at the Second Niger Bridge.
In a statement on his social media pages, Obi described Mrs. Azuka as “qualified, competent, and a woman of strength, resilience, and commitment to serve,” urging citizens to rally behind her candidacy.
“I have always maintained that leadership without compassion is meaningless. Supporting her is not only an investment in competent representation but also a collective act of solidarity that will help ease the pain and heavy burden of her loss,” Obi said.
Peter Obi is also part of a coalition of opposition politicians who have united under the ADC ahead of the 2027 presidential election, pledging to strengthen the party’s structures and prioritise the collective interest over individual influence.
