Joachim Okafor, the new State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for Rivers State, has emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration to protect critical national assets, infrastructure, and ensure public safety. Speaking at the NSCDC State Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Okafor expressed gratitude to Commandant-General Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi for the opportunity to serve and committed to upholding the corps’ integrity.

According to a statement by NSCDC spokesperson SC Olufemi Ayodele, Okafor highlighted that safeguarding critical assets is crucial to the nation’s economy and the core mandate of the NSCDC. He stressed that this goal can be achieved through strong collaboration with the state government, security agencies, community and religious leaders, civil society organizations, youth, and the media. His administration will focus on combating crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, environmental damage, and other crimes.

Assistant Commandant-General (ACG) Ayinla Olowo, who oversees Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, praised Okafor as a seasoned and dedicated officer, noting that NSCDC postings are opportunities for growth rather than punishment. He acknowledged the efforts of the previous Commandant and urged Rivers State NSCDC personnel to stay disciplined, loyal, and committed.

Previously, Okafor served as the Niger State Commandant before his recent appointment. Meanwhile, the South-South Youths Initiative, led by Imeabe Oscar, is calling for the reinstatement of Basil Igwebuze as NSCDC Commandant, citing his commendable record and achievements during his tenure in the state.
