NNPP Hit by Major Blow as Kwankwaso Announces Sudden Resignation

In a significant development that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.

In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, personally signed and made available to media, by the former Kano State governor and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate announced his departure, describing the move as difficult but necessary.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso stated.

He expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the party’s National Leader and flagbearer in the last general elections, noting that his decision did not come lightly.

As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he added.
Kwankwaso, a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics and leader of the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement, cited the need for a strategic shift in response to the evolving political climate in the country.

Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” the statement read.

He also extended gratitude to the party’s leadership, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and members across all levels for their support and dedication.

Despite his exit, Kwankwaso emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in pursuit of national progress.
We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he said.

The resignation is expected to trigger fresh political calculations ahead of future elections, as analysts speculate on Kwankwaso’s next move and the potential impact on the NNPP’s structure and influence nationwide.
