Nigeria On High Alert: Illicit Shipments Threaten National Security
Nigeria’s Onne Port has become a hotspot for illicit shipments, prompting authorities to take swift action. The discovery of multiple containers filled with arms and pharmaceuticals has raised concerns about national security and public health.
Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi expressed alarm at the frequent importation of dangerous goods, describing it as a “grave threat” to the nation. He highlighted the need for emergency protocols to prevent further breaches.
A recent seizure of containers revealed a staggering haul of illegal goods, including: Military gear and footwear worth millions, suspected to be destined for illegal militias,
Large quantities of codeine-laced cough syrup and other pharmaceuticals valued at billions, posing a significant risk to public health.
Adeniyi vowed to bring perpetrators to justice, stating, “We will not tolerate these crimes against our nation. The Nigeria Customs Service will work tirelessly with other agencies to protect our people and our borders.”
The Onne Port has long been a concern for authorities due to its strategic location and high volume of cargo. However, the recent surge in illicit shipments has raised fears about the port’s security and the ability of criminals to exploit it.
In response, the Nigeria Customs Service has launched a crackdown on illegal activities at the port, including the deployment of additional personnel and technology to enhance security.
The agency has also called on the public to report any suspicious activities or information related to illegal shipments.
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the Onne Port has become a battleground in the fight against illicit trade, and Nigeria’s authorities are determined to stem the tide.
