Niger Delta
Nigeria maritime sector can be led by the Niger delta _ NACCIMA
The Nigeria Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has asserted that the Niger Delta region, which accounts for over 70 percent of Nigeria’s coastline, possesses ample human and logistical resources to lead the maritime industry. This potential is attributed to over 68 years of oil exploration in the coastal states, which has resulted in the development of various local solutions for the maritime sector.
Dr. Emi Membere-Otaji, NACCIMA’s vice president, made these remarks during a seminar and maritime awards event organized by the Energy Maritime Reporters (EMR) corps in Port Harcourt. He highlighted one such solution: the use of locally-made and operated flat-bottomed tugboats to transport containers from Apapa Port in Lagos to other locations, alleviating the traffic congestion at the country’s seaports. He encouraged the adoption of locally-built flat-bottomed barges and tugboats for moving containers to terminals to further ease the gridlock.
