Brazil has officially announced Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the BRICS alliance, as confirmed by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in a statement released on Friday.

With this announcement, Nigeria becomes the ninth partner country of BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

The statement highlighted that Nigeria, with the largest population in Africa and the sixth-largest in the world, is a key player in the continent’s economy and shares common interests with other BRICS members. Nigeria actively contributes to strengthening South-South cooperation and advocating for global governance reforms, both of which are key priorities during Brazil’s current presidency.

Initially consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the BRICS alliance began expanding as more countries expressed interest in joining. The partner-country category was introduced during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024, when reports confirmed Nigeria’s inclusion. Eche Abu-Obe, the former spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had previously mentioned Nigeria’s acceptance into the group.
